When you have a passion for singing and music throughout your teenage years it’s natural to start to wonder how to become a famous singer aged 17. Now some may say that that is a pipe dream but others say it’s a healthy question to ask and if your heart is in it to pursue in whatever way you can.

Justin Bieber pulled it off using Youtube videos and Jordin Sparks pulled it off on a TV talent show – American Idol.

Sparks won the sixth season of American Idol at the tender age of 17 back in 2007. She really did find the fast track for becoming a famous singer by the age of 17.

NY Daily News had this to say:

Fans fell in love with her when then-17-year-old Jordin Sparks became the youngest winner in “American Idol” history.

Jordin Sparks is also the youngest winner of the competition, winning at age 17 as well as the first winner from outside the Southern United States. As of 2012, Sparks remains the last female winner of the competition, as her successors have been all male.

So you could say auditioning and getting on American Idol could be a key, but what led Jordin to the show?

Sparks attended Northwest Community Christian School in Phoenix through the eighth grade and then attended Sandra Day O’Connor High School until 2006, when she was homeschooled to better concentrate on her singing.

So leading up to Idol she was home schooled so she could concentrate on her singing, but what singing did she do for her parents to recognise that home schooling was the way to go?

Sparks is an evangelical Christian and attends Calvary Community Church in Phoenix. On her American Idol biography, she thanks her parents and God for her win.

So here we can see that Sparks sang in Church regularly and for many this includes being a part of the choir. But was this the only preparation she had before American Idol?

Before appearing on American Idol, Sparks participated in and won such talent competitions as Coca-Cola’s Rising Star, the Gospel Music Association Academy’s Overall Spotlight Award, America’s Most Talented Kids, Colgate Country Showdown, and the 2006 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search.

Prior to Idol, Sparks frequently performed the national anthem at various local sporting events, notably for the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, and Arizona Diamondbacks. Sparks also appeared withAlice Cooper in his 2004 Christmas show and toured with Christian contemporary singer Michael W. Smith in 2006.

When we dig in and have a look, Sparks was quite a seasoned singer BEFORE she got to American Idol. This definitely highlights the importance of practice, practice, practice and in Sparks case performance practice to large audiences. How determined are you or the teenagers you know to get out there and get shows, talent shows and performances under your belt?

Sparks was most definitely not an over night success, even if it looked that way to viewers of American Idol. She is obviously a hard focused worker on her craft.

So is this the real key to learning how to become a famous singer aged 17?

It is surely a journey and Sparks’ own journey is now taking a few new twists and turns.

Jordin Sparks – Actress in a new Movie

Sparks is starring along side the late Whitney Houston in this movie that’s set to open on August 17th.

In the Supremes-inspired musical opening on Aug. 17, Sparks plays an aspiring singer struggling with her sisters to break into the 1968 Motown music business.

Houston appears posthumously as Sparks’ mother, a former singer determined to shelter her daughters from the dangers of showbiz.

In a wide-ranging Daily News interview in Sunday’s Your New York section, Sparks, 22, dishes about ditching her inner diva and learning to sing and dance as part of a group — and to stop staring at the camera like she’s filming one of her own music videos.

So Sparks singing career has led her to star in a movie about a singer, what a natural transition this is.

“When I got on the movie set, I had to train myself not to look into the lens!” she said.

“The whole movie was a huge learning experience for me. I was like a sponge, just soaking everything up.”

Now it’s exciting that Sparks career is expanding into acting and movies, but how did she respond to the death of her co-star Whitney Houston?

“I was just crying, I was so devastated,” she said, admitting that she secluded herself for months to work through her grief.

“I was somebody who had listened to Whitney’s music and tried to emulate her,” she said.

“So to get to work with her in this intimate setting, to do scenes where we were yelling at each other, and then holding hands with her . . . I just loved her.”

From all of Sparks work ethic before getting to American Idol, I’m sure she’ll be just as good a success as an actress.
