When you love singing it’s natural to want to learn how to improve your singing voice at home. You could say it all starts at home – and what about the shower? Do you sing in the shower? Do you think any of the top stars sing in the shower?
CTV News reports one such star that absolutely loves to do this.
One Directions Niall Horan sings in the shower…One Direction heartthrob Niall Horan can’t help but show off his vocal talents while he’s taking a shower and likes to belt out the latest tunes.
He told TOTP magazine: “I sing all the time in the shower! I’ll sing whatever’s in the charts. Today I was singing ‘It Will Rain’ by Bruno Mars in the shower.”
Niall – who is joined in the band by Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne – also revealed how his love of singing used to get him told off while he was at school.
He said: “I used to get in trouble at school, singing songs at the back of the class.”
Many people enjoy singing in the shower, just like Niall. Have you yourself ever noticed one particular phenomenum – that your singing voice always seems to sound better in the shower?
It’s an interesting effect and many people seem to report this effect. Is there a particular reason for this?
There a number of opinions on this effect.
How to improve your singing voice at home, even in the shower
STEAM:
In a hot shower the steam and moisture naturally goes into the back of your throat to your vocal chords more than it would if you were just drinking water. Because of this your vocal chords are warmed up to a greater degree, causing you to sing better – breathing in moisturised air allows vocal chords to relax, elongate and vibrate more.
Here are some very practical tips from Stephen Sondheim:
Sleeping with a humidifier is necessary for serious singers. The steam from the humidifier, enters the nose and throat, bringing much needed moisture to the area. This is highly important for those who sleep with the mouth open which dries out the throat. You can also inhale steam from a hot shower or boiled water (put a towel over your head when inhaling the steam). Be careful not to get a steam burn.
Moisture to the throat is needed at all times, particularly when singing and giving speaking presentations. Sip, sip and then sip some more all day long. Keep a bottle of room temperature water with you at all times. The throat must be wet in order to function.
Another additional explanation is provided by the Science of Music:
Your shower works like a low-tech sound mixerto modify your voice in at least 3 ways, all of which seem to improve it’s sound. You can think of these 3 sound effects as volume, reverb and bass boost.
So I guess there’s a lot that can be learned from the interesting effect that your singing sounds better in the shower. And I guess me for one will be more aware of moisture, steam and some more sip sip sipping.
Here’s a way you can help.
